Listen Up: Protect Your Hearing in the Workplace

October is National Protect Your Hearing Month, and we here at Safety Solutions & Supply want to help you do just that.

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) has put together this event to educate everyone about noise-induced hearing loss and different precautions you can take to prevent it.
Noise-induced hearing loss can happen at any age. From teens to senior citizens, people of all ages have had signs of possible hearing due to loud noises such as firearms, music, and work equipment.
If you have employees who work around loud equipment for long periods of time, consider taking some necessary precautions so you can have a safe workplace environment for you and your employees.
In the workplace, the best way to protect your employees is to provide protective equipment such as earplugs or earmuffs. You can also post the appropriate signage indicating when and where this equipment should be worn.
At home or in the community, you can protect yourself and those around you from noise-induced hearing loss by lowering any volume that is over 85 decibels. If you cannot lower it, move away from the noise. Children are especially susceptible to any loud noises, so make sure to protect the ears of younger children.
If you are interested in participating in the National Protect Your Hearing Month, you can do so by sharing information about noise hazards with your family, friends, and co-workers. You can share this fact sheet with them from the NIDCD and post about it on social media. We want to help protect as many people as possible, and the best way to do that is by making them aware.
