Take Steps to Stop Car Theft

In 2017, more than 750,000 vehicles were stolen in the U.S. That’s an average of $6 billion dollars in stolen vehicles. According to the United States Department of Transportation, 75.4% of those vehicles were automobiles, and nearly half of those thefts could have been prevented.

There are many causes Safety Solutions & Supply supports throughout the year. Among the top designations for July is National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration promotes a yearly campaign against theft.

Follow these tips to help ensure your car is where you need it, when you need it.

Tips to Prevent Car Theft

  • Do not leave your vehicle’s key in or on your vehicle.
  • Make sure all windows and doors are closed and locked.
  • Park in well-lit areas at all times.
  • Take all valuables with you. Don’t leave them visible from the outside of the vehicle.

You can also protect your vehicle by installing audible and visible devices such as an alarm, steering wheel locks, flashing lights, or window etching. Computer chips in the ignition key also helps prevent thieves from bypassing a vehicle’s ignition system and hot-wiring the vehicle. Another way to protect your vehicle is by using a vehicle recovery system, which allows law enforcement agents to track your vehicle by using electronic transmission technology.
If your vehicle does get stolen, you should contact law enforcement immediately so they can begin searching for the vehicle before it gets too far away. Be sure to provide your license plate number, all details about the exterior of your vehicle, and your Vehicle Identification Number. You should also contact you insurance company to file a claim.
