ON THE WEBSITE www.glennsmithcoaching.com, executive coach Glenn Smith has an article titled “7 Reasons Your Company Needs a Clear, Written Mission Statement.” His top two reasons are:
1. It determines the company’s direction. “Smart business owners use this statement to remind their teams why their company exists because this is what makes the company successful,” Smith writes.
2. It focuses the company’s future. “The mission tells us what we’re doing today that will then take us where we want to go in the future,” he writes.
On the blog at www.tinypulse.com, freelance writer Laurel Weibezahn also has a seven-point article about mission statements, and hers is titled “The Power of Mission Statements: What Is a Company Mission Statement and Why Is It Important?” Points one and two are:
1. Mission statements guide the company forward. “Mission statements are an incredibly important navigational tool when you are thinking about the future of your company,” Weibezahn writes.
2. Mission statements focus your energy and attention. “The mission statement shouldn’t just be your beginning. It should stay with you through every decision,” she adds.
This is interesting. From different perspectives, different backgrounds, and different career paths, both writers essentially have the same top two reasons for company mission statements. The other five reasons from both Smith and Weibezahn make for additional interesting reading, and we support their overall point — that owner-managers with companies, both new and mature, should draft a mission statement if they don’t already have one.
We at Safety Solutions & Supply certainly see the value of a mission statement, and we’ve had one since the earliest days of the company, which was founded in 2009. The mission statement reads as follows:
“Safety Solutions and Supply will provide the highest level of professional services that exceed our client’s expectations. We accomplish this by working in a professional manner in an environment of mutual respect recognizing that our performance is judged collectively and that every employee contributes and has value to our organization.”
It’s a mission that guides us forward and gives us focus. It’s a statement we’re proud to make and pleased to share.
