Living in Florida, it is vital to have a plan in place for Hurricane season. That’s why we here at Safety Solutions and Supply want to share a few steps with you to help you put together a plan for the benefit of yourself and your employees.
- Create an Evacuation Plan
The first step is to create an evacuation plan that includes a chain of command, emergency functions and who will perform them, specific evacuation procedures, as well as plans to make sure everyone is safe. According to OSHA, “Some businesses are required to have an Emergency Action Plan meeting the requirement under 29 CFR 1910.38.”
- Know what the Terms Mean
There are two terms so be sure to not get them mixed up. Hurricane/Tropical Storm watch means a hurricane or tropical storm is possible in the specific area. While a Hurricane/ Tropical Storm warning means that a hurricane or tropical storm is expected to reach the area within 24 hours.
- Be Properly Equipped
You’ll also want to make sure you and your employees are properly equipped. You can do this by building a Basic Disaster Supplies Kit which includes water, food, a battery-powered radio, a flashlight, first aid fit, batteries, as well as a cell phone with backup battery, and local maps.
- Host Training Exercises
As the saying goes, “Practice makes perfect.” So be sure to train your employees on what to do in case of an emergency and practice evacuation plans on a regular basis. You can also use the lessons you learned from these exercises to update the evacuation plan accordingly.
We all know that hurricanes are commonplace in Florida, so be sure to have your plan in place sooner rather than later.
