We here at Safety Solutions and Supply are all about safety that’s why we want to share these safety alerts with our fellow employees in the mining industry.
In OSHA’s June 2020 safety alert, they stated that 28 miners have died after falling from heights over the last 10 years. This is an increase of 8% in the last two years. Most of these fatalities occurred when the proper safety protocols were not being followed. According to the United States Department of Labor, “the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued 92 imminent danger orders for people working at heights without fall protection between January 2019 and June 2020.”
These fatalities could have been prevented by following the proper procedures and practices when it comes to fall protection. These practices start by designing work areas and developing job tasks to minimize fall hazards. Next, you need to establish an effective fall prevention and protection program and then make sure your employees are trained so they better understand it.
Additional practices include providing the correct PPE for each miner, provie identifiable, secure anchor points to attach lanyards, and give daily reminders about the importance of using fall protection equipment to your supervisors, miners, contractors, and truck drivers. By providing these as well as the proper platforms/ scaffolding and safe truck tarping facilities, you will be well on your way to a safe work environment and preventing any further fatalities among your employees.
If you or your employees need any fall protection equipment, we here at Safety Solutions and Supply have the necessary PPE, so come in and speak to our team of safety professionals.
